Homemade Maple Syrup Recipe
I am working on eliminating corn syrup from our families diet (as much as that is possible). We are use to eating the off brand maple syrup from the store, which of course is loaded with corn syrup. I would love to be able to order real Vermont maple syrup but the budget just doesn't justify spending that kind of money on a pancake topping. I feed our family pancakes or waffles on average three to four times a week so we go through quite a bit of syrup.
I had read about others making their own maple syrup so I thought I would give it a try. My first few attempts were long ordeals. (In my opinion for syrup - standing there stirring while boiling for 15+ minutes.) You may be thinking 15 minutes, that doesn't sound too bad. For this mommy of four blessings, 4 and under, 15 minutes is a large chunk of time! Especially if you consider I will be making this two times or more a week. This last time I wised up. Here is the recipe with a total cooking time of only 5 minutes!!!
Homemade Maple Syrup
1 1/2 cups water
2 cups brown sugar
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 tsp maple flavoring
Mix water and sugar in pan. Bring to boil stirring constantly while dissolving sugar. Turn down to medium heat, continue to boil for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and add vanilla and maple flavoring. Let cool and then bottle.
**Note to self** Let COOL before pouring it into a used plastic syrup container. You can imagine what happened..... Thankfully I had this cute glass jar (see picture above) that was just waiting to be used for something.
If you want to stand around longer *wink* you can cook it down more for a thicker syrup. I have over cooked it to the point that after it was refrigerated it didn't want to come out of the bottle very well. It also left a lot of the sugar stuck to the bottom. So remember it will thicken up more once cooled.
In my quest for finding healthy food alternatives as well as frugal homemade items, Homemade Maple Syrup is one that will be here to stay. And hey, I can even spare 5 minutes.
