April's Caramel French Toast

This French Toast recipe is so yummy!  Almost everyone I have made this for has requested the recipe.  It is a great recipe for company because you put it together the night before.  We like it so much I make it up in the morning to have for supper!
Sorry no picture at the moment but when I make this again I will definitely take a picture.
April's Caramel French Toast
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup butter
1 tsp. vanilla
12 slices of bread
1 1/2 cups milk (2 1/2 cups for homemade bread)
6 eggs, lightly beaten
1 tsp. cinnamon
chopped pecans or walnuts, optional
In saucepan, bring brown sugar and butter to boil.  Reduce heat to medium and simmer until thickened.  Pour mixture into greased 9x13 pan.  Sprinkle with nuts.  Place six slices of bread over mixture and top with remaining bread.  In large bowl combine milk, eggs, vanilla, and cinnamon.  Mix well and pour over bread.  Sprinkle with nutmeg.  Cover and refrigerate overnight.  Uncover and bake in a 350 degree oven for 40-50 minutes or until knife inserted into the middle comes out clean.  Caramel is baked in so no syrup is necessary.
This is great with strawberries or another type of fruit for a complete meal.
